The red marker on the map is the epicenter of the earthquake, the origin of which was in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, China on the border with Kyrgyzstan, at a depth of 10 km, 124 km S of Karakol, Kyrgyzstan, 139 km W of Aksu, China and in 251 km SE of Almaty, Kazakhstan.

Focal mechanism solution of the origin was calculated by GS RAS with signs of initial arrivals of P waves at 116 stations, including 93 stations which registered compression waves (plus signs), and 23 stations which registered tensile waves (minus signs). The stations are located in the interval of epicentral distances 0.4-93.4º and in azimuth sector Az=0-366º. Focal mechanism solution in stereographic projection on the lower hemisphere and elements of the mechanism are presented in the table. The table also contains focal mechanism solutions obtained at the USGS NEIC with WW-phase Moment Tensor (Mww) technique and in Lamont-Dohert Earth Observatory of Columbia University, USA (LDEO GCMT) with СМТ (Centroid moment tensor) technique. Solutions from different centers are close. The earthquake occurred under prevailing action of compression stresses oriented to the south (AZ=174-178º). One nodal plane NP1 strikes SW (STK=232-236º), another plane NP2 strikes E-SE (STK=107-113º), both planes are dipping to the horizon with close angles (DIP=42-62º). The type of motion along NP1 – left lateral slip with reverse fault component, along NP2 – reverse fault with right lateral slip components. The seismic moment of the earthquake was obtained by GS RAS from the spectrum of longitudinal waves at the "Magadan" station (∆=46.8º), it makes Mo=3.94*10**19 N*m, Mw=7.0. Seismic moment according to USGS NEIC makes Mo=3.731*10**19 N*m, Mww=7.0. According to LDEO GCMT it makes Mo=4.4*10**19 N*m, Mw=7.0.
