Information message on severe earthquakes in Greece, March 3 and 4, 2021

A devastating earthquake with M = 6.1 (at the epicenter on the SHSI-17 scale) occurred in Greece on March 3, 2021 at 10:16 GMT (13:16 Moscow time). A day, 8 hours and 22 minutes later on March 4 at 18:38 GMT, 21:38 Moscow time there was a second shock (destructive at the epicenter on the SHSI-17 scale) with a magnitude of M = 6.2.

Parameters of the earthquake have been determined in the Alert Service (AS) of Information Processing Center (IPC) of Geophysical Survey of RAS in Obninsk with station data obtained from digital and analog seismic stations of Russia, countries of CIS and from abroad. Alert message on the first earthquake has been delivered in 14 min after registration to the Ministry of Emergency of the Russian Federation (EMERCOM). Alert message on the second earthquake has been delivered in 13 min.

Preliminary processing for the first earthquake has been done with data from 12 stations, accurate processing - with data from 59. Preliminary processing for the second earthquake has been done with data from 12 stations, accurate processing - with data from 59.

Red markers on the map show the epicenters of the earthquakes, whose origins were located in the northern part of Greece, at a depth of 10 km. The epicenter of the first shock was located 30 km W-NW of Larissa, 35 km NE of Trikala and 240 km NW of Athens, the capital of Greece. The epicenter of the second shock was located 18 km NW of the first one.
