Information message about the devastating earthquake on the coast of North Sumatra, Indonesia, December 6, 2016

The devastating earthquake with M = 6.8 occurred December 6, 2016 at 22:03 GMT (December 7, at 01:03 Moscow time) on the coast of North Sumatra, Indonesia.

Parameters of the earthquake have been determined in the Alert Service (AS) of Information Processing Center (IPC) of Geophysical Survey of RAS in Obninsk with station data obtained from digital and analog seismic stations of Russia, countries of CIS and from abroad. Alert message on this earthquake has been delivered in 12 min after registration to the Ministry of Emergency of the Russian Federation (EMERCOM).

Preliminary processing has been done with data from 14 stations, accurate processing - with data from 65.

The map marker shows the earthquake epicenter, the origin was on the north-east coast of North Sumatra, Indonesia, at a depth of 10 km, 90 km E-SE of Banda Aceh, Indonesia, and 343 km NW of Medan Indonesia.
